Funded project – A sustainable business model for retired electric vehicle batteries
Developing a circular economy business model to create Australia’s first scalable reuse and recycling program for retired lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles.
The project will involve feasibility studies, pilot projects and business case development for the new service expected to launch in 2022.
Background
This CES (Circular Energy Storage) project seeks to develop a business plan for Australia’s first scalable reuse and resource recovery program of retired electric lithium-ion batteries as a by-product of the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Innovative Mechatronics Group (IMG) will co-implement a feasibility study with Relectrify (Vic) and will contract world renowned experts Circular Energy Storage Research and Consulting (UK).
As lithium-ion batteries begin to dominate the waste stream as by product of the EV industry, alternative sustainable and responsible end-of-life waste management methods need to be developed. After investigating international markets, IMG identified the opportunity to be a leader in the investment of circular economy solutions for these batteries.
This project aims to design, develop, test, and launch to market a business model for Australia’s first scalable reuse and resource recovery program of retired pure electric lithium-ion batteries, a by-product of the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
Innovative Mechatronics Group is now a member of ABRI (and Battery Stewardship Council).
Objectives
- Upcycling healthy A-grade EV battery packs into second-use applications, like industrial ESS and portable power
- Identifying avenues of material recycling from unhealthy B-grade EV battery packs
