Description

As Victorians, we take great pride in our food and drink culture. In Victoria we:

  • grow 25% of all fresh food in Australia
  • process over 50% of all Australian-made foods
  • are responsible for around 25% of Australia's total food waste.

Food waste is a global issue, with approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food wasted worldwide each year. About one third of all food produced for human consumption ends up as waste. This not only has financial implications, but also contributes significantly to global warming.

To address this issue, Victoria is committed to halving food waste by 2030. Achieving this goal requires us to explore ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle food through a circular economy. By rescuing and redistributing food that would otherwise be wasted, we can optimise resources throughout the entire supply chain.

The 'Path to Half' report provides the first-ever Australian perspective on the true cost of food waste. It delves into the issue of food waste in Victoria and presents strategies to prevent it.
